Turpentine oil is obtained from coniferous gymnosperm trees belonging to the genus **Pinus (Pine trees)**.
Pines produce an oleoresin (crude pine resin) secreted through resin canals when tapped. Through steam distillation of this resin, volatile **oil of turpentine** is separated from the non-volatile solid residue known as **rosin (colophony)**. Turpentine is commercially employed as a solvent and thinner in paints, varnishes, and medicinal ointments.
Remember that *Pinus* belongs to Gymnosperms (naked-seeded cone-bearing plants). Resin canals in its wood serve as an evolutionary defense against wood-boring insects and fungi.
संज्ञा जोडगोळी: **P**inus (पाइन) = **P**aint solvent (Turpentine / तारपीन तेल) + **P**aper pulp.
Botanical Association: **Pinus (Pine)** $\rightarrow$ **Pine Resin** $\xrightarrow{\text{Distillation}}$ **Turpentine Oil** (Paint solvent).
• Option 1 (Moss): Non-vascular bryophyte; yields no commercial oleoresins.
• Option 2 (Fern): Seedless vascular pteridophyte; not a source of turpentine.
• Option 3 (Sunflower): Angiosperm producing edible culinary oil, not turpentine solvent.
• Option 4 (Pinus plant): Exactly correct; primary commercial source of resin and turpentine.
